About Plovdiv

Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria and a key administrative center. It serves as the seat of Plovdiv District, Plovdiv Municipality, Maritsa Municipality, and Rodopi Municipality. The city is located on both banks of the Maritsa River, in the central part of the Upper Thracian Plain.

Plovdiv covers an area of 102 sq. km. According to the National Population Register as of 15 March 2021, the city has a permanent population of 383,127 inhabitants. Alongside Bulgarians, the population includes communities of Armenian, Jewish, Greek, Turkish, and Roma origin, reflecting the city’s long-standing multicultural identity.

Plovdiv is the leading administrative, academic, economic, commercial, and transportation hub of the South Central Region of Bulgaria. The city plays a strategic role in national and regional development, combining a strong industrial base with a growing innovation and services sector.

Plovdiv is recognized as the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe and the sixth oldest in the world (The Daily Telegraph, 2010). Its origins date back to the beginning of the 6th century BC.

Founded as a Thracian settlement, the city developed into a major urban center during the reign of Philip of Macedon. It flourished during the Roman and Byzantine periods, when significant architectural, cultural, and infrastructural heritage was created. Plovdiv preserved its urban and cultural continuity throughout the centuries of Ottoman rule and experienced renewed economic and cultural growth during the Bulgarian National Revival.

After the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878, Plovdiv became the capital of the autonomous region of Eastern Rumelia. Following the Unification of Bulgaria in 1885, the city retained its role as the country’s second-largest urban center after Sofia, a position it continues to hold today.
